Installation of Bridge Expansion Devices

The construction and installation quality of the expansion device is a key link to ensure the effectiveness and service life of the expansion device. To ensure the installation quality of the expansion device and fully utilize its design performance. Our company has developed the following process in accordance with the standards of the Ministry of Transport (IT/T327-2004). We hope that the construction unit will strictly follow this process during the installation process.

1. Installation principles

To ensure the smoothness and consistency between the expansion device and the bridge deck. It is recommended that the installation of expansion devices should be carried out after the completion of bridge deck paving.
The anchoring structure of the modular bridge expansion device is welded with anchoring bars on the steel section (side beam). Although there are various structural forms of anchoring bars, the purpose is to reliably anchor the expansion device in the beam or bridge platform. Therefore, the key to installing the expansion device is to use transverse or auxiliary bars (overlapped short steel bars) to connect the pre embedded bars and anchoring bars. That is to say, the intersection points of the transverse bars, pre embedded bars and anchoring bars are firmly spot welded, or the intersection points of the auxiliary bars (overlapped short steel bars), pre embedded bars and anchoring bars are firmly spot welded.

2. Clean the reserved slot

★ Find the centerline of the gap between the beam ends, mark and cut the joints correctly according to the design requirements in terms of position and size.
★ Clean the backfill material in the reserved slot, adjust the slot gap to the design size, roughen the concrete, and clean the slot thoroughly.
★ Organize pre embedded steel bars to accommodate the lifting of expansion devices.

If there are too few pre embedded steel bars, steel bars must be implanted, or steel bars can be used instead of pre embedded bars in the pavement layer or lifting beam.
