Regarding bowl shaped supports

We all know that bowl bearings are a new type of bridge bearing (usually composed of steel components and rubber). Compared with other types of supports and cast steel roller shaft supports (usually compared with the same type), pot type supports have significant advantages (large bearing capacity, large horizontal displacement, flexible rotation, light weight, compact structure, simple construction, low building height, easy processing and manufacturing, and low cost). Therefore, pot type bearings are also more suitable as ideal bearings for large collapse bridges.

We all know that bearing capacity is one of the important indicators of bowl bearings. So, after knowing the reaction forces of the bridge's dead and live load bearings, we can preliminarily determine the allowable bearing capacity of the selected pot type rubber bearings.

After determining the allowable bearing capacity of the bowl shaped support, we need to remember and apply this point: to ensure that the maximum reaction force of the support does not exceed 5% of its allowable bearing capacity.

Additionally, there are two points to note: firstly, the allowable bearing capacity of pot type rubber bearings does not necessarily have to adhere to the principle that the larger the bearing capacity, the better. If the allowable bearing capacity is large, the size of the support will also be larger, but this also requires increasing the size of the pier, which will not only cause waste but also be unsightly. Secondly, the friction coefficient of the PTFE active plate in the support should be inversely proportional to the positive pressure of the support. So, if the reaction force of the support is much smaller than the allowable bearing capacity of the support, the friction coefficient will also increase significantly, which will lead to a significant increase in the horizontal force on the pier and foundation.

The difference between ball bearings and pot type rubber bearings. The main difference between them is that pot type rubber bearings mainly meet the needs of beam rotation through the rotation of rubber in the steel pot. However, since the reaction torque is related to the diameter, thickness, hardness, and rotation of the rubber bearing and rubber, it will cause a corresponding change in the rotational reaction torque of the bearing with the change of the bearing angle. The spherical support satisfies its rotational requirements by sliding between the spherical crown liner and the spherical PTFE plate, so the spherical support only needs to overcome the friction between the crown liner and the spherical PTFE plate to rotate.
